3 Digital spools of educational justice

The road to social justice runs through the classroom

On Monday, June 17, U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, announced that he would push for a warning label on social media platforms advising parents that using the platforms might damage adolescents’ mental health.

Starting in 2021, our education justice series addressed the dangers to public health that the digital data dimension of education can present, while Dr. Murthy formally declared online misinformation an urgent threat to public health. Now three years later, he has escalated the warning.

As the Advisory on Building a Healthy Information Environments reminds us: “Together, we have the power to build a healthier information environment.” It is early enough in the lifecycle of AI for everyone in the education ecosystem to learn from the lessons of social media, reject a repetition of past missteps, and build a healthier, more just, information environment.

“Let’s do that!” says Mary Lang.
It’s a perfect time to highlight Lang’s 3-part series on educational justice.
